There are many front porch designs to build in front of your home. But it is necessary to consider some key measurements that will guide you to design the front porch effectively.

  1. Width of the porch: First thing that you should consider is how wide your porch should be. Width of a porch differs depending on the scale of the house, the amount of budget and the intentional use of the porch. One purpose should always be to retain a clear and wide area the entrance to the home can be highlighted.
  2. Differences in porch depth: Depth for porches can be of 6 ft. (1.8 m) , which is  desirable, but  8 ft. (2.4 m) is ideal. There are many homes that are built with shallower depths. A 4-ft. (1.2-m) depth behind the column permit  wooden rocking chairs and potted plants to display the street with just enough room to pass. Using of smaller-scale furniture that allow circulation and work with the architecture is done to make shallower depths work well.
  3. Traditional designs: Craftsman houses, farmhouses and also classical-style houses have porches where designs are made in such a way that it identifies characteristics of them.
  4. Coexistent styling: Contemporary houses are nothing without porches. Their implementation is very unusual. Clean lines are maintained in this project  by the broken sidewalk, garnished platform landing and wooden platform porch. The entranceway door is set back about 4 ft. (1.2 m), and a deeper space of about another 4 ft. (1.2 m) permits  for the arrangement  of two comfortable outdoor chairs and a table. The wall that holds the main door measures about 6 ft. (1.8 m) wide, and the niche which is deeper is about 9 ft. (2.7 m) wide. The scale flatters the house and effortlessly offer the public-to-private alteration.
  5. Depth and height of steps: Steps to rise up from the ground level to the porch floor, if often needed for porches. While those can be made sharp, a rise (riser) of 6 in. (15 cm) and a run (tread) of 12 in. (30 cm) are well suited for most situations. Steeper risers can have steps which are shorter, but shorter risers require longer treads.
  6. Railing: in most cases, porches that are 30 in. (76 cm) or more above the ground require a railing. Even if the drop is less than 30 in. (76 cm), it may be advisable to have a railing depending on the design and the ways the space will be used by you.If the floor of your porch is less than 30 in. (76 cm) above the ground, the shorter railing is can be provided. Another adjustment for required guardrails is that a 4-in. (10-cm) domain must not be able to go through any opening in the railing, for safety reasons.

If the above key factors can be followed in a systematic manner, you can build a front porch and enjoy spending quality time with your friends and family for the whole day.
